Gani graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the Institute of Mass Communications of the same university. He began his career as Chief of Office of an associate justice of the Supreme Court, moving on to become operations head of the erstwhile Philippine Federation Against Copyright Theft, Inc.. He thereafter worked at the legal office of the Philippine Journalists, Inc. before joining the firm of Cayetano Sebastian Dado & Cruz where he served as partner in charge of litigation for 7 years. He then ventured into the insurance world beginning as head of legal, compliance, and claims of Pru Life UK. Thereafter, the Philippine Life and Insurance Company invited him to lead its legal department as General Counsel which he did for 10 years. He left private engagement to become Chief Legal Counsel of the Government Service Insurance Company for 2 years. Over the course of his career, Gani served on the board and became corporate secretary of several companies.
